1. Start with the host connection
A USB-C plug describes the shape of a connector, not everything the connection can do. Before counting ports, confirm what the laptop, tablet, or desktop supports over that port: charging, data speed, video output, and the relevant USB or Thunderbolt standard. Two machines with identical-looking ports can have very different display and power limits.
Read the dock’s compatibility list alongside the device manufacturer’s specification. Operating-system support matters too. A dock that relies on DisplayLink may need a driver, while a native video connection depends on what the host can output without one. If the product page does not state compatibility with the device and operating-system version you use, treat that as an unanswered question.
2. Translate “dual display” into a real arrangement
Display support should name resolution, refresh rate, connection type, and whether both outputs can run at once. “Two 4K displays” is incomplete without the refresh rate and host requirements. A 4K screen at 30Hz can feel noticeably less fluid than the same screen at 60Hz for everyday pointer movement and scrolling.
Also check whether the outputs mirror or extend the desktop on your operating system. Some laptops natively support only one external stream. A DisplayLink dock can add displays through compressed USB data, but that is a different method with software requirements and workload tradeoffs. Neither approach is automatically better; the right one depends on the host and the work.
3. Follow the watts from the wall to the laptop
A dock may advertise a large power-adapter number and deliver a smaller amount to the host after reserving power for itself and its downstream ports. Look for the host charging figure, usually stated as USB Power Delivery passthrough. Compare it with the charger supplied with the laptop.
A lightweight laptop may be comfortable below its maximum charging rate. A larger machine under sustained load may charge slowly, hold steady, or continue losing battery if the dock cannot deliver enough. If the dock is bus-powered, confirm whether it can pass through power from a separate charger and whether that charger is included.
4. Match every port to a job and a speed
Make a short list of what will remain connected: monitor, keyboard, mouse, storage, network, audio, camera card, and charging cable. Then match the list to the actual ports. Three USB ports are not interchangeable when one runs at 10Gbps, another at 5Gbps, and a third is intended mainly for charging.
- External SSDs and fast card readers benefit from a clearly stated data speed.
- Gigabit Ethernet needs both a gigabit dock port and suitable network equipment.
- SD and microSD slots can differ by standard and whether they work simultaneously.
- Audio ports may combine headphones and microphone, or support output only.
- Downstream USB-C ports may carry data without video or meaningful charging power.
Leave one port free for the device you have not added yet. A dock bought with every port already assigned has no room for the desk to change.
5. Check the box, cable, heat, and placement
The included pieces affect both cost and performance. Confirm whether the dock includes its power adapter, the correct host cable, a stand, and any required driver guidance. A short captive cable can be useful in a bag and awkward on a deep desk. A removable cable is easier to replace, but only if the replacement carries the required data, video, and power specification.
Docks also make heat. An aluminum body may be part of the thermal design, so warmth during use is not automatically a defect. It still needs airflow and a stable surface. Place the dock where cables can reach without sharp bends, where card slots remain accessible, and where a heavy display cable will not pull it off the desk.
A compact comparison
Write one line for each candidate: host support; simultaneous displays; host charging watts; fastest data port; included adapter and cable. That comparison usually reveals more than the total port count.
