Carbon poles with a flick lock rather than a twist lock, because a twist lock slips once it is wet and muddy.
Twist locks rely on friction inside the shaft and give up once grit and water are in there. External flick locks clamp from the outside, adjust with a coin, and can be tightened on the trail when they eventually loosen.
Cork moulds to the hand and stays warmer than foam when wet. Pull the sections apart after a wet day, since water left inside corrodes a pole from the inside out, and leave the locks dry: oil is what makes them slip.
At 210g a pole the carbon saves real energy over a long day, and it is also more brittle than aluminium: carbon fails suddenly where aluminium bends. That is the trade, and it is the reason to keep them out from under a fallen pack.
