A cotton gabardine trench with the usual apparatus — storm flap, epaulettes, buckled cuffs — and a removable wool lining for the cold months.
Gabardine is woven tightly enough to shed a shower on its own; the finish on top of it is what carries you through a downpour, and that finish wears off. Reproofing every second season is maintenance, not a fault.
The wool lining turns it into a winter coat and comes out again in spring, which is most of the year covered by one garment. It is cut to close over a jacket, worth knowing if you are between sizes.
Cotton gabardine is woven in a steep twill at a high thread count, which is what lets a natural fibre shed water at all. The epaulettes, storm flap and buckled cuffs are military carryovers, and each of them still does something.
